Broad-leaf Cattail (Typha latifolia) with Red-winged Blackbird
Great swaths of cattails can outcompete other native species, but they also provide shelter and food for many animals and birds. From the tip of the new shoots to the base of its rhizome, all parts of the plant are edible, including its pollen, traditionally used as a flour.
