Pitcher's Thistle (Dune Thistle) (Cirsium pitcheri)
This native thistle, with its reflective white hairs and deep roots is perfectly adapted to the sun and wind exposure of its dune habitat. Found only along the shoreline of lakes Michigan, Huron and Superior, it is now threatened due to habitat disturbance. Dr. Zina Pitcher first recorded this thistle in the 1820’s on the Grand Sable Dunes of Lake Superior.
